Clinical Hypnotherapy
Clinical Hypnotherapy is the application of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes, with hypnosis being defined as “a state of consciousness in which your logically analytical faculties are reduced sufficiently to allow deeper levels of your subconscious mind to be utilised for the benefit of your health”. Or to put it simply… you are so relaxed that we can go straight to the part of your mind that says “I can’t” and change it to “I can, and will!”
Once you are in a relaxed state I will make suggestions to your subconscious mind - in the present ("you are now...) or the future (when you wake every morning you will...) - to help replace the negative in your life with positive. The suggestions may be direct, indirect or via a story/metaphor (as advocated by Milton Erickson hence termed Ericksonian).
It is a very powerful tool - sometimes it may only take one or two sessions for a client to see a major improvement in their lives.
Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy is the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with a Clinical Hypnosis setting. The combination of conscious work on thoughts and behaviours and subconscious change through suggestion can give excellent results. It does require clients to complete homework so a high level of commitment to change is needed.
What Hypnotherapy can do for you - through the use of hypnotherapy, I can help you with issues, habits, fears and anxieties that you wish to change. For example, you can stop smoking, change poor eating habits, increase your self-confidence, manage and eliminate panic attacks. My special interest is pain relief in childbirth.
I can also help you through times of stress such as the lead up to interviews and exams.
With relatively few sessions (compared to some other therapies) we can get to the root of problems and modify the way the mind sees and deals with them allowing you to get on with your life in a more positive way.
What Hypnotherapy will not do! - Hypnotherapy does not take away your ‘power’; you are always in full control of your faculties – you are not unconscious or asleep – and you can bring yourself out of the hypnotic state at any time. You will not bark like a dog, cry like a baby, or admit your deepest secrets – unless you really want to. And no matter what you have seen in films, you CANNOT be made to do ANYTHING which your morals or beliefs would not allow you to do in any normal situation. It is as safe for children as it is for adults.
Furthermore, hypnotherapy cannot help anyone who does not truly want to make changes, so I do not take on clients who have been ‘sent’ by spouses, partners, parents etc.
Hypnotherapy can be used for:
Stress and Anxiety - generalised or event specific (exams, public speaking etc)
Confidence / Self-esteem building
Pain management - such as childbirth/labour, or dental
Weight control/weight loss - dealing with underlying reasons for over-eating where relevant
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Stop Smoking / Quit Smoking
Sports Performance
Fertility (infertility)
Habits - nail biting, hair pulling (trichotillomania)
Fear and Phobias - from Arachnephobia (spiders), through Hydrophobia (water), Nosocomephobia (hospitals) all the way to Zelophobia (jealousy) and even including Arachibutyrophobia (peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth)
